Most of the mangosteens are planted in the rural provinces of Thailand and each tree can live up to a hundred years! Each day, local farmers will ride their scooters to collect the fruit from the mangosteen trees. The farmers once told me that they have to put their names on the trees to prevent others from stealing their mouth-watering fruits. Once the mangosteens are collected, the ones with perfect, glossy skin are sent out for export. Leftovers are to be sold in Thailand at a much lower price. It is extremely hard to find mangosteen with perfect white flesh inside since most will be infested with a disease that causes yellow latex to form.

Locally, mangosteens are sometimes cooked with syrup or they are used to make mangosteen salad. But for most Thais, they enjoy eating the mangosteen’s pulp fresh out of its rind.
