An Avocado a Day Keeps Bad Cholesterol Away
Avocado originated in South America. It is widely grown in Mexico, Guatemala, and the islands of the West Indies. Among different landraces of avocado, Hass avocado is the most common commercial cultivar in the world and sometimes called “King of Avocado” during to its richest and creamiest flesh. In the United States, Hass avocado accounts for more than 80% of the avocado crop and 95% of the California crop.
In Thailand, there are avocado farms in Nakhon Ratchasima, Chaiyaphum, Nan, Tak, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, etc. but the high concentration is somehow in the north and the northeast. When compared to other economic plants, avocado trees seem easy to take care of. But when it comes to “the king,” Hass avocado must be grown at least 1,000 meters above sea level and kept away from windy conditions. Plus, the temperature between daytime and nighttime must not differ more than 4-5º C.
Although being known as a high-fat fruit, the fat in avocado has a significant health benefit — that is, it helps control cholesterol count. The science behind this fact is that the avocado oil contains 84% of unsaturated fatty acids, while the saturated fatty acids are as low as 16%. The unsaturated fatty acids play a key role in boosting high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or “good” cholesterol and reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol. As such, it improves blood lipids profiles, which further promotes cardiovascular health and lower the risk of coronary artery disease.
Avocado is rich with essential nutrients. It contains powerful antioxidants such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and phytochemicals, which are beneficial to our skin and healthy aging. Vitamin A and beta-carotene in avocado also help improve vision; vitamin B prevents beriberi disease; potassium and folate promote blood pressure control, etc. Besides, avocado is loaded with fiber and protein but has much fewer carbohydrates. Thus, it is an ideal food for a weight-loss diet.
